What if Walt Disney let all the rejection he recieved get to him? Imagine if Disney never had faith in himself or his creations. Where would everything beautiful and Disney be?

So Seth Godin recently had an podcast called “The Art of Noticing and Then Creating”. It was a really interesting interview about the world today and innovation and creation and things of that matter. A couple of points that he made that really stuck with me are:

  1. Don’t stop trying, what doesn’t work now, try again, rejection is common and will happen to you, but have faith. Have faith in yourself.
  2. What matters are the little things. Making a bigger, more influential and memorable impact on a smaller group will always be better than making a small, unnoticable impact on a bigger group.
  3. Anybody can be an artist, to be a truly talented artist aim for “genuity that connects, not (something) fake that’s entertaining”
  4. We have built this society, complicated, intricate and beautiful and all we can do with it is make meager creations? It is not enough, we can do more with this universe that we have made.

*Cue the yodeling*

So this week during class we’ve started to watch Raising Arizona, which is one of my teacher’s favorite movies, and I can see why.

I’m usually not a Nicholas Cage fan besides a few of his movies, and before class, I had never heard of Raising Arizona, so I really was not expecting much, but man I was wrong to think that. I genuinely really like it! I don’t know, something about the story line captivated me. Either that or the fact that the babies in this movie were ADORABLE.

If you guys recognize the blog post title, then I like you. If you recognize the blog post title specifically from Guitar Hero III, then I like you x2.

So as we’ve gotten deeper and deeper into All Quiet in the Western Front in my class, one of the things that has stood out to me is how Paul, the main character feels about his and his comrades age and maturity level. Though they’re still young, their mind’s age is so old because of all they’ve been through. What should have been their last years of youth were spent in the war, which forced them to become men.

So in my class this week, the week of LuUuUuUuUuUv, my teacher has decided to give us another one of his life lessons. This one, was about Valentine’s Day (obviously).

Just a heads up, this post is sort of negative-ish, rant-like and sad so I decided to put in some Valentine’s day cards to hopefully lift your spirit a little.

So in class this week, my teacher showed us this video:

blogA Work of Artifice

The bonsai tree
in the attractive pot
could have grown eighty feet tall
on the side of a mountain
till split by lightning.
But a gardener
carefully pruned it.
It is nine inches high.
Every day as he
whittles back the branches
the gardener croons,
It is your nature
to be small and cozy,
domestic and weak;
how lucky, little tree,
to have a pot to grow in.
With living creatures
one must begin very early
to dwarf their growth:
the bound feet,
the crippled brain,
the hair in curlers,
the hands you
love to touch.

blogDo YOUR best

So finals week is upon us here at my school and in my English teacher decided not to give us a final (THANK YOU MR.T). Instead, he decided to have everyone share and talk about both their innovations projects and blogs. While people went up to present their blogs (we did blogs first then projects), I  couldn’t help but get a little jealous over how successful some of the blogs were. And of course I understand that, it’s normal to get a little jealous, but then I started to compare my own blog to theirs, which is where I stopped myself; Why should I compare the success of two completely different people? The only thing that did for me was make me a little bummed out.

“Even more than she loved herself”

I’m not sure if you guys remember, but a while back in one of my posts I talked about having an innovation project that fulfills a certain need. Well my friend and I have finally figured out what we’ve wanted to do and we’ve titled it The Giving Tree. Yes, the name is inspired by the book written by Shel Silverstein but the only other thing that our project has in common with the book is that (hopefully) we can make someone happy with what we provide.
